MP for Newcastle Central and Shadow Science Minister, Chi Onwurah, has been to visit the University’s Stephenson Building.
With phase one due to be completed in the Autumn, the Stephenson will be the place for future engineers, researchers, designers, and visionaries to collaborate and tackle world challenges together.
The building is currently undergoing a massive transformation that will see it become a world-class engineering facility. The minister heard how the development will provide exceptional facilities for teaching and learning, research and innovation.
Phase one is due for completion in the Autumn. The work is part of the University’s ongoing investment in delivering an outstanding experience for our students.
Engineering for the future
Director of Student Recruitment for engineering, Dr Sarah Dunn, said the development was the University’s response to the way today’s students want to learn. "Students no longer want to be taught in big lecture theatres. They want a mixture of online learning and small tutorials and ‘maker spaces’ where they can collaborate on projects."
The Minister was impressed by the building’s engineering, the involvement of young apprentices from the region and the use of local materials. She said: "I’m sure the stunning design will inspire North East engineers for generations."
